Daily use is bound to wreak a bit of havoc on your home’s plumbing systems. At home, we Calgarians are hard on our drains, with bits of food being washed down the kitchen sink and hair balls getting stuck in the shower drain.
There are a few things homeowners can do to keep their drains “healthy” – these DIY drain cleaner solutions work on minor clogs caused by certain types of debris that get stuck in the pipes. However, when these fail and you’re faced with more serious clogs, it’s time to get a hold of Lone Star Plumbing and Heating, Calgary’s family-owned plumbing company, for a more thorough fix. Our professional team has the products and tools to unclog any drain, no matter how serious the situation.
The first step in drain health is preventing clogs. Read our blogs about how easy it is to prevent a major problem in your drains here:

If you’ve got a clog despite your prevention efforts, you can try the at-home DIY solution. This homemade “Drano” helps disintegrate fats into salt and harmless gas. Some sources say the homemade version can break down hair clogs, but it’s very rare that this solution will actually destroy hair.
Step 1. Pour ½ a cup of baking soda into the clogged drain.
Step 2. Pour in ½ a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain with a plate or bowl to contain the chemical reaction that occurs (similar to the volcano you made at the Science Fair as a kid).
Step 3. Wait 15 minutes for the chemicals to do their work.
Step 4. Remove the cover from the drain and pour 1-2 litres of boiling water down the drain to flush out the remnants. Test drain to see if it is running better.
Once again, this is an at-home solution that works on certain types of drain clogs. Preventing clogs is always best practice for keeping your home’s plumbing running well, but we at Lone Star Plumbing and Heating in Calgary know that professional service from experienced and caring plumbers is important.
