Hydronic Heating

What is a Hydronic Heating System?

Hydronic heating, also called “radiant heating,” is a central heating option that uses water to heat your home. It works by circulating heated water through a piping system that warms your home through baseboards, radiators, or by heating the floor itself. Hydronic heating is highly efficient and has a low environmental impact.

The idea for hydronic radiant heat goes back to medieval times, when certain buildings were heated by a network of channels beneath, but the technology has come a long way since then!

How Does Hydronic Heating Work?

In a hydronic system, the water is heated through conduction in a boiler and then a pump circulates the water through an interconnected system of tubing. As it cools, the water is sent back to the boiler where it is heated again and then recirculated. The water heats your home either from under the floor or through base-board heaters or radiators.

Hydronic heating cost may seem high at first, but in the long term it will save you money. Installation of a hydronic radiant heating system can be a bit more expensive than forced-air systems, but once you are using it, it will be very cost effective and decrease your monthly bill.

It is reasonably simple to add more piping in order to extend your heating system if you wish to do so in the future.

Benefits of Hydronic Central Heating

  • Makes your floors warm and inviting–no more freezing cold floors on your bare feet in the winter!
  • Compatible with any type of traditional flooring including laminate, carpet, vinyl, and hardwood. Keep in mind, however, that the thicker your carpet is, the less effective your hydronic heating will be.
  • Economical, effective, and environmentally-friendly central heating option.
  • Very safe because there are no exposed wires or other parts.
  • Four times more efficient than electricity for moving heat.
  • Distributes heat more evenly than any other central heating options.
  • Low maintenance system–no vents or grilles that collect dust and need to be cleaned.
  • Forced-air heating systems lead to dry air, which can be tough on your skin and hair. Hydronic heating does not cause dry air.
