How to Tell if it’s Time to Replace Your Pipes

So, you want to keep your plumbing updated and running smoothly, but, uh, how do you tell if your pipes are in good shape? It can be hard to know whether or not your pipes are ready to be replaced unless you know a few specific things to look for. We’ve got the info you need to get to know your pipes.

Typical Lifespan of Common Pipe Material

First of all, it’s easier to know what kind of shape your pipes are in if you know when they were installed and what they are made out of. Here are the typical lifespans of the most common types of pipe:

  • Cast iron: 75-100 years
  • Copper: 50+ years
  • Brass: 40-45 years
  • PVC: 25-45 years
  • Galvanized steel: 20-50 years

No clue what kind of pipes you have? We can help you with that!

Signs Your Pipes Need Replacing

Discoloured Water

Rusty coloured water often indicates pipe corrosion. Have your pipes checked if you notice the colour of your water seems off.

Low Water Pressure

Low pressure is sometimes the result of leaks in pipes. If you notice your water pressure become lower and there is no obvious reason for it, have a plumber inspect your pipes for leaks.

Metallic Tasting Water

If your water has a slight metallic taste or smell, it is likely that your pipes are corroding and flaking off into your water. If your water regularly tastes metallic, it is probably time for a new set of pipes.

Slow Draining

A slow draining sink or tub may just be some gunk built up in your drain or it can indicate tree roots that have intruded into your pipes or pipes breaking down internally and clogging themselves up.If it’s tree roots or your pipes breaking down, you are probably ready to have new pipes installed.

Lead Pipes

If your pipes contain lead, you should have them replaced immediately. Lead is a very hazardous, potentially harmful material. Newer houses are not built with pipes that contain lead, but some older homes still have lead pipes.

If you suspect that your home might have lead pipes but you’re not sure, have a plumber do an inspection. They can let you know whether your pipes are lead (and if not, what material they are made out of) and help you with new pipe installation if needed.
