Home inspections are a common and often necessary step in the buying and selling of homes. A home inspector does a detailed visual inspection of the home and looks for areas of concern. If you’re planning on selling your home, it’s a good idea to do a run through to ensure that the plumbing throughout is working properly. If it’s not, call in a plumber to fix the problems before your house goes on the market. The last thing you want is to lose the entire sale over a hidden plumbing problem that could have been fixed. Here are a few tips you can use:
In your kitchen, run the dishwasher and garbage disposal to make sure they’re running properly. At the kitchen sink (and all other sinks throughout the house) carefully look at the faucet to check for leaking or dripping. As well, look out for leaking underneath the sink, where you should also check for things like corrosion or rust on the pipes. To ensure proper drain flow, fill all the sinks up with water before draining them completely.
In the bathrooms, flush the toilets and watch for continual running after the tank is full. Double check that debris clears entirely from the bowl, and look at the base of the toilets for signs of water damage. Fill the bathtub up with water before draining it to make sure there is good drain flow.
It’s also a good idea to check your water meter to make sure there’s no water loss occurring. Check the water supply valves for leaks by turning them on and off. If you’ve had sewage problems in the past or live in an older home, you may want to hire a plumber to do a video inspection of the sewer line and make sure it’s in good working condition.
