3 Things to Check Before You Install a New Furnace

Winter can be a very unpleasant time of year if your home is not properly heated. However, before you upgrade your furnace through Lone Star Plumbing and Heating there are 3 things you should check for in order to optimize your home heating system.

  • Heating Duct Air Leakage
Before you install your new furnace you should check your air ducts. A leaky air duct will accidentally reroute heat to areas of the house where it is not needed (like a crawl space)  often at the expense of living areas within the home. You can test your ducts in order to insure they are not leaking, but a more efficient route would be to simply replace your ducts anyway. You can either opt to do this yourself or call Lone Star Plumbing and Heating to help you ensure your ducts are properly sealed.
  • Room Air Balance
Your home heating system operates most efficiently when the air pressure is balanced throughout the entire home. If you open a door to say, the living room, and your furnace turns on to warm your home then hot air is forced into the living room via the heating ducts. However, if the air pressure is higher in the living room than in the air ducts the system will have to work harder to move warm air into the room and to move the cold air out of the room. As the pressure increases the air you just paid to heat will try and escape the room in any way possible, including out through the small cracks around the windows. This then means you are paying good money to heat the great outdoors. When you call Lone Star Plumbing and Heating for your quote, be sure to ask them to check your room air balance before they install your new furnace.
  • Furnace Filter
A furnace filter is great for filtering out any dust in your system, making the air in your home more pleasant to breath. However, when filter becomes too dirty then it restricts airflow, causing your furnace to work harder to heat your home. You should change your furnace filter every 4 to 6 weeks, and more often than that if you live in a particularly dusty area, like near a construction zone. Lone Star Plumbing and Heating will be happy to answer any questions you have relating to changing your filter, and offer any assistance you may require.
